“STARI PARK” MONUMENT OF NATURE – Temerin

Stari Park in Temerin covers an area of 20 jutra in the immediate vicinity of Sečen Castle. In the mid-19th century, Sečen Castle became the property of the Fernbach family, and their gardener, Vince Sadlek, transformed the surrounding park into an ornamental garden and arboretum. Among the gardeners who tended the park, Mikloš Terteli from Temerin stands out. A qualified horticulturist, he devoted almost 20 years to caring for the park during the 1950s and 1960s, carrying out his duties with dedication and care. Under his stewardship, the park flourished. Since then, however, the flowers and gardens have disappeared. Today, the park is maintained by the Temerin Public Utility Company. It was placed under protection in 2001 and classified as a Category III Monument of Nature.

Among the tree species, the European nettle tree (Celtis occidentalis), locally known as bođoš, is particularly prominent. Although this species is not characteristic of the region, its fruit makes a significant contribution to the diet of birds that spend the winter in these parts. Pedunculate oak grows densely along the banks of the small pond running beside the eastern edge of the park, although it also occurs sporadically throughout the park. Other species include white poplar, horse chestnut, plane trees and occasional Scots pine. Of particular value are several surviving yew trees, a protected species. Unfortunately, some of the yews have been severely damaged in recent years.

Among the herbaceous plants found here are star-of-Bethlehem and lesser periwinkle (Vinca minor). In spring, much of the park is densely covered with spring snowflake, while common comfrey grows in the wetter areas. Lily of the valley, once found here, has almost completely disappeared. In the ditch extending along the western side of the Castle, bracken and small ferns can be found.

Birds are the most numerous groups of animals in the park. Almost 70 species have been observed within the park, while amphibians also inhabit the area.

The park is further enhanced by its lake, which is home to a considerable number of fish. A recreational fitness trail equipped with exercise stations has also been created for visitors who enjoy physical activity.
