THE MONASTERY OF THE NATIVITY – Bavanište

When from Pančevo you get to Bavanište the road sharply continues on the right to Kovin. If you want to go to the monastery just go straight along, near the electricity station, about 500m, to the first small cross road. Turn left, and then go by the narrow road, through the wood you get there after 2km. The church of the Birth of the Holy Mother of God was found in 15th century. The founder of the church is unknown. To the 18th century the monastery was not touched but in 1716. it was ruined and robbed by the Turks. The monastery life died and the monastery was not renovated partly because Maria Theresa banned any buildings or renovations among the Serbian monasteries. At last in 1856., thanks for the people charity work the monastery with the church was renovated. Then there was built the chapel and the parvis. The second big renovation took place in 1997., and is still in progress. The is almost completely renovated. Part of the paintings were done but it is also in progress. The church itself was built on the spring. The spring exists even today and it was blessed. It is men`s monastery and it is active.
