Kovačica

Kovačica, located in the south-eastern part of Banat, is a unique destination where different cultures, languages and customs intertwine, creating the distinctive spirit of the area. Known for its large Slovak community, which has preserved its heritage here for more than two centuries, Kovačica has retained its traditional way of life, handicrafts and the unique atmosphere of the Banat plain. It has gained worldwide recognition for its naïve art, whose best-known representatives are Zuzana Halupova and Martin Jonaš. Their works, along with the creations of numerous local artists, can be discovered at the ”Gallery of Naïve Art”. The ”Babka International Ethno Centre” makes a special contribution to preserving the area’s cultural identity, promoting the art, traditions and way of life of the local community. In the village of Idvor, birthplace of the great Serbian scientist Mihajlo Pupin, visitors can explore his birthplace and the memorial complex dedicated to his life and work. Cultural heritage enthusiasts can also discover a number of religious sites, including the iconostasis by Konstantin Danil in the Orthodox church in Uzdin. Surrounded by the fertile landscapes of Banat and located near the Tamiš River and the Deliblato Sands, Kovačica offers an authentic experience of the art, traditions and hospitality of southern Banat.
