STONE FLOWER FOUNTAIN – Sremska Mitrovica

STONE FLOWER FOUNTAIN – Sremska Mitrovica

South of Ćira Milekić Square extends the City Park, which, during the time of the Military Frontier, served as a training ground for the Petrovaradin Regiment, a drill field, and as a Paradenplatz. It is assumed that the park acquired its current recognizable form in the 1870s, after the disbandment of the Military Frontier. At that time, white stone Roman monuments were also placed in it, representing the beginning of the future lapidarium.

Today, it is a landscaped green area with a central fountain in the form of a stone flower, which was made in 1948 according to a design by Irina Nepokojčicka, the first known female architect in Sremska Mitrovica. The fountain was placed on the site of the former “Imperial Linden,” which was planted by the Petrovaradin municipal estate in 1879 as a memorial for the silver jubilee (“pir”) of the imperial married couple – Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth.
