„RITOVI DONjEG POTISJA“ SPECIAL NATURE RESERVE

The “Ritovi Donjeg Potisja” Special Nature Reserve is located in the central part of Vojvodina, along both the left and right banks of the Tisa River, between the weir near Novi Bečej and the confluence of the Begej River with the Tisa. The protected area covers 3,010.67 hectares, of which 954.92 hectares are under Level II protection, while 2,055.75 hectares are under Level III protection. The manager of the Special Nature Reserve is the “Nature Reserves” Institution of Zrenjanin, located at 2 Vojvode Petra Bojovića Street, Zrenjanin.

The “Ritovi Donjeg Potisja” Special Nature Reserve encompasses eight former meanders and a belt of floodplain forests in the Tisa foreland. Located on both sides of the present course of this international river, these areas are connected by a largely well-preserved continuous forest complex. The oxbow lakes of the Lower Tisa region provide feeding grounds for storks and herons and serve as territory for the white-tailed eagle, as well as habitat for forest-dwelling bird species, notably the western marsh harrier and the black stork. The aquatic habitats and the surrounding drier habitats are home to rare mammal species, including the otter, which is also a strictly protected species.

This area is considered the most beautiful and most representative habitat for a large number of different protected and strictly protected species in the Serbian Tisa region.
