THE REFORMATIVE CHRISTIAN CHURCH – Novi Sad
Početna / Experiences / THE REFORMATIVE CHRISTIAN CHURCH – Novi Sad
At the corner of Šafarikova and Pavla Pap streets there is Reformation church. That strict and simple building, with neo-gothic tower where was put the symbolic Bethlehem’s star, almost 150 years is the praying home of religious community in Novi Sad which exists for three centuries.
Today’s church was found on the place of former hay market, which was bought by the Calvinists for the religious purposes. It was built from 1862. to 1865. in neo-gothic style, on the projects of famous architect Đerđ Molnar, and thanks to the effort of the priest of that time Imre Manjoki. Manjoki was very dedicated priest, who contributed to development of his religious community as much as he could, and as the example of his dedication let’s just say that he wanted to open the church’s comprehension school in Novi Sad. After his death the community re-paid him by lifting two tombstones, one in Mohač, where Manjoki died, while the second one is on the portal, above the door of the church in Novi Sad. How big is the honor you can feel if you have on mind that followers of Calvin avoid any sort of iconography.
This sacral object is extremely interesting because of that conspicuous lack of religious symbols. The Bethlehem’s star on the bell tower is the only symbol on the church, which is usual for this religious community in Hungary, while in the churches in Germany and Switzerland, instead of the star, on the bell tower is the figure of the rooster, which symbolizes Peter’s denial of Christ.
