“ŠLJUNKARA” LAKE – Kovin

“ŠLJUNKARA” LAKE – Kovin

The Šljunkara site is located just 2.5 kilometres from Kovin, nestled within a beautiful woodland belt, and is a favourite recreational destination among local residents. It is separated from the embankment and the River Danube by woodland alone, and the lake is situated alongside EuroVelo 6, an international cycling route that follows the course of the River Danube. The larger lake covers an area of 2.6 hectares, while the smaller lake covers 2,500 m² (0.25 hectares).

The lakes were formed following gravel extraction, when the resulting basins gradually filled with water. They are supplied exclusively by underground Danube water, which is naturally filtered through layers of gravel. Consequently, the water level in the lakes depends on the level of the river. Rich in fish, the lakes are a popular destination for anglers from across Serbia. The grassy areas surrounding the lakes will also provide an ideal setting for campers wishing to spend their summer holidays at Šljunkara once the construction work has been completed and the campsite opened. So far, the unpaved access road has been repaired, two sports courts (for basketball and volleyball) have been built, the park furniture has been replaced and children’s playground equipment has been installed. Numerous events of importance to the municipality are also held at this location.

Construction of a municipal bathing and swimming complex, including an indoor swimming pool, began at the Šljunkara site towards the end of 2018. The facility is intended to provide athletes, recreational users, domestic and international tourists, and all residents of the municipality with access to its facilities throughout the year. The semi-Olympic swimming pool has not yet been completed or opened to visitors.
