THE TOWER OF VRDNIK – Vrdnik

THE TOWER OF VRDNIK – Vrdnik

In the Middle Ages, Vrdnik had a fortress and a town. According to Hungarian and Papal documents, it was mentioned under the name Castrellum Rendek or Rendek. The town was surrounded by a city wall.

Of the old medieval town, the best-preserved structure is the defensive tower in the shape of a horseshoe, standing eighteen meters high. The Vrdnik Tower belongs to the buildings of medieval military architecture and served as an important strategic and defensive point. Recent research indicates the existence of Roman foundations beneath this significant fortification.

The solitary tower has withstood both time and human activity, and it is the only remaining part of the once-powerful town of Vrdnik.
