“KOVILJSKO-PETROVARADINSKI RIT” SPECIAL NATURE RESERVE

In the vicinity of Novi Sad lies the Kovilj-Petrovaradin Marsh Special Nature Reserve. It comprises a complex of marsh, wetland and forest ecosystems, with numerous biological communities. It is located in south-eastern Bačka, along the middle course of the Danube, on both its left and right banks, near the settlements of Kovilj and Petrovaradin.

The significance and appeal of this area lie in the preservation and diversity of the characteristic features of the marshlands, including river islands, side channels, ponds and wetlands; the native plant communities of the marshlands, including forests, meadows, reed beds and sedge beds; and the fauna characteristic of this habitat, comprising 172 bird species and 46 fish species, particularly the presence of rare and declining species.

Due to its exceptional natural values, Kovilj-Petrovaradin Marsh was declared an internationally important bird habitat (IBA) in 1989, and in 2004 it was included in the list of protected areas dependent on water and significant for the Danube River Basin (ICPDR).
