“CARSKA BARA” SPECIAL NATURE RESERVE

The ”Carska Bara” Special Nature Reserve is situated on the alluvial plain of the Begej and Tisa rivers, in the immediate vicinity of major roads connecting it with Zrenjanin, Belgrade, Novi Sad and other destinations. Covering an area of 4,726 hectares, this complex comprises the bed of the Old Begej River, Carska Bara, Tiganjica, Perleska Bara, Botoški Rit and Mužljanski Rit. As a nature reserve, Carska Bara provides a habitat for 240 rare bird species, of which 130 are resident and 110 migratory, making the reserve one of the most important bird habitats in Europe. Owing to its exceptional natural value, the reserve has been included in the Ramsar, IBA and IPA lists of protected and internationally recognised areas. As one of the important resting sites along the migratory routes of birds, some species stay here for only around ten days, while others, such as wild geese from Siberia, also spend the winter here. All eight species of heron found in the area nest at Carska Bara, making the heron a symbol of the reserve. The rich and diverse bird colony is also home to other species, including pelicans, Eurasian coots, white-tailed eagles, Montagu’s and marsh harriers, cormorants, sparrowhawks and many others. The mosaic of woodland, meadow, steppe and wetland vegetation also provides a habitat for a number of rare and protected plant species, including white and yellow water lilies, Queen Anne’s Thistle, pheasant’s eye, marsh orchids, water chestnuts, duckweed, frogbit and others.
