Novi Sad

Situated on the banks of the Danube, opposite the magnificent Petrovaradin Fortress, Novi Sad is the administrative, cultural, university and tourism centre of Vojvodina and one of the most important cities in Serbia. Its history dates back to prehistoric times, and over the centuries, different people and cultures have succeeded one another in the area, leaving their mark on the city’s rich heritage. A particularly significant moment in the development of Novi Sad came in 1748, when Empress Maria Theresa granted it the status of a free royal city under the name Neoplanta, marking the beginning of its rapid cultural and economic development. Today, visitors can enjoy a stroll through the historic city centre, where Zmaj Jovina Street and Dunavska Street stand out, along with the Bishop’s Palace, the Cathedral Church of St George, the Almaš Church, the Uspenska Church, the Novi Sad Synagogue and the monumental Roman Catholic Church of the Name of Mary. The city is a treasure trove of culture, with institutions such as Matica Srpska, the Gallery of Matica Srpska, the Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection, the Museum of Vojvodina and the Museum of Novi Sad, which house valuable collections and bear witness to the history of the region. A particular attraction is Petrovaradin Fortress, offering views over the Danube, as well as artists’ studios and events of international significance. The proximity of Fruška Gora, wine routes and picnic areas further enriches the city’s tourist offer. The combination of Central European architecture, a multicultural spirit, a vibrant cultural life and hospitality has made Novi Sad a renowned European destination and a city that rightly bears the epithet “the Serbian Athens”.
