Plandište

In the eastern part of Banat, amidst the vast and fertile plains of Vojvodina, lies the Municipality of Plandište, situated on the road between Vršac and southern Banat, not far from the Romanian border. The area is characterised by numerous waterways, including the Brzava River, the Danube–Tisa–Danube Canal and the Šulhov Canal, all of which contribute to the richness of its natural landscape. The municipality comprises 14 settlements and has for centuries been a meeting place of different cultures and peoples, making it one of the most ethnically diverse areas of Vojvodina today. The settlements of Velika Greda, Margita and Veliki Gaj developed during the 18th century, following the liberation of Banat from Ottoman rule, while the settlement of Plandište itself has been known by several different names throughout history, bearing witness to the turbulent historical changes that shaped the area. Visitors can discover the rich cultural heritage of the region’s many communities, experience the traditional way of life of the Banat plain and enjoy the hospitality of the local people. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture and the processing of agricultural products, while oil and natural gas deposits are also of importance.
