Petrovaradin Fortress, the symbol of the city, also known as the “Gibraltar on the Danube,” was being built on the right bank of the Danube from 1692 to 1780, following the system of the French engineer Marquis Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. It is a unique fortification of its time in Europe.
The fortress covers 112 hectares, has four levels, and features 16 kilometers of underground tunnels with a constant temperature of 12°C. It has always been an attractive location, as evidenced by numerous archaeological layers representing all cultures from the Paleolithic period to the present. Even in Roman times, the site hosted the fortification Cusum.
The fortress consists of the Upper and Lower Town, with the main fortification symbolized by the Clock Tower, whose hands uniquely move in reverse to indicate hours and minutes. The colorful town below is dominated by the Church of Saint George with its monastery, the Military Hospital, the former Franciscan monastery, and the most beautiful Baroque private building, the House of Ban Jelačić.
