Sremska Mitrovica

Sremska Mitrovica, situated on the banks of the Sava River, preserves the heritage of ancient Sirmium, one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire and a former imperial capital. The most valuable remains from this period can be seen at the Imperial Palace archaeological site, while the Museum of Srem houses a rich collection that bears witness to the city’s long and turbulent history. The city is home to a number of valuable religious buildings, most notably the Church of St Stephen and the Church of St Demetrius, as well as the Lazar Vozarević Gallery, dedicated to the artist born in Sremska Mitrovica. During the summer, the banks of the Sava and the city beach become favourite places for relaxation and entertainment, with numerous events such as the Wine Park, Srem Folk Fest and Art Front Festival. In the immediate vicinity of the city are the Fruška Gora monasteries of Petkovica, Šišatovac, Kuveždin, Bešenovo and Vranjaš, valuable parts of the cultural and spiritual heritage of Srem. Nature lovers are attracted to the Zasavica Special Nature Reserve, known for its rich biodiversity, rare species of birds and animals, and well-preserved wetland habitats. Sremska Mitrovica is therefore a place where ancient history, culture, the river and nature come together to create a unique tourist destination.
