Zrenjanin, the largest city in Banat and the administrative, economic and cultural centre of central Banat, is situated on the banks of the Begej River, in the heart of a vast plain and one of the most densely interconnected river networks in Europe. It was first mentioned in reliable historical sources in 1326 under the name Bečkerek, a settlement that developed on three islands in the Begej. Over the centuries, it was ruled by various states and empires, until it became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918. Today, the city is known for its rich cultural and architectural heritage, including the Town Hall and the Great City Park, the Ascension Church, the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, the Roman Catholic, Reformed, Russian and Slovak Evangelical churches, as well as numerous historic palaces and houses. Zrenjanin’s multicultural character is of particular importance. Members of different ethnic and religious communities have lived here for centuries, leaving a strong mark on the city’s architecture, traditions and cultural life. The area surrounding Zrenjanin is rich in waterways and natural landscapes, from the Begej and Tisa rivers to the Danube–Tisa–Danube canal network, offering opportunities for fishing, recreation and spending
