Žabalj

Žabalj is located in the geographical centre of Vojvodina, at the crossroads of important routes between Bačka and Banat and close to the Tisa River. The municipality comprises four settlements – Žabalj, Čurug, Đurđevo and Gospođinci – which preserve the diverse cultural and natural heritage of this part of Bačka. Particular tourist interest is found in Čurug, one of the older settlements in the surrounding area, known for its well-preserved Pannonian vernacular architecture and distinctive windmill. Čurug is also home to an Orthodox church featuring a valuable iconostasis painted by the renowned Serbian artist Đorđe Krstić. The Tisa and Jegrička rivers, together with the canals of the Danube–Tisa–Danube system, offer opportunities for fishing, spending time in nature and a range of recreational water activities. The fertile plains and developed agriculture form an important part of the municipality’s identity, while the local food industry further contributes to its economic profile. Žabalj is therefore an appealing destination for those wishing to discover the quieter landscapes of Vojvodina, the traditions of Pannonian settlements and the natural beauty of the region’s great rivers.
