MUSEUM

A permanent exhibition dedicated to the “Karađorđevo” Stud Farm opened at the museum on 30 September 1983. The museum houses trophies, medals, rosettes and awards won by the stud farm’s horses over the preceding several decades. These awards were won at competitions in carriage driving, show jumping, flat racing, horse shows and breeding stock exhibitions. Of particular note is the trophy awarded to the stud farm as the overall champion at the Novi Sad Fair in the 20th century, as well as the trophy for the “Neretva” race, organised under the auspices of the military and held at the Karađorđevo racecourse.

Other exhibits include horse-drawn carriages, sleighs, saddles and harnesses dating from the period of Josip Broz Tito’s rule. Numerous photographs document the diplomatic hunting events organised in Karađorđevo, visits by heads of state and politicians to the stud farm, and a visit by a Yugoslav delegation accompanied by a four-in-hand carriage to Queen Elizabeth II. There are also photographs of horses that won the country’s most prestigious races and races at the Vienna racecourse. The museum also displays horse studbooks dating back to 1880, as well as the stud farm’s visitors’ book.

The visitors’ book of the “Karađorđevo” Stud Farm, first opened on 1 June 1924 and still used by guests and visitors today, is of inestimable value. It is also one of the oldest visitors’ books in Serbia. The impressions, comments, suggestions, proposals, criticisms and promises recorded in its pages bear witness to the stud farm’s establishment, development and present-day condition. The book bears testimony to the good times and hardships the stud farm has experienced. It has survived wars, crises and periods of poverty. Its pages contain entries by heads of state, presidents, ambassadors, politicians, ministers, professors, journalists, university students, school pupils, and experts in animal husbandry, veterinary medicine and equine science.

In 1979, a sculpture entitled Rearing, by the sculptor Jovan Soldatović, was erected at the entrance to Karađorđevo, in the immediate vicinity of the stud farm and museum. It is almost identical to his sculpture Horses at Play, installed at the entrance to the Novi Sad Fair in 1973. The sculpture symbolises the entire settlement of Karađorđevo, the stud farm, the strength of horses and the agricultural complex established on the foundations of the stud farm and its resources. It also represents the strength of agricultural production in Vojvodina. The strength and importance of the agricultural complex at the time are illustrated by the fact that Karađorđevo acquired its own sculpture just a few years after the Novi Sad Fair.

The stud farm is open from 07:00 to 14:00 on weekdays and Saturdays.

Visits in the afternoon and on Sundays must be arranged in advance.
