Slano Kopovo is one of the last remaining preserved saline marshes in Vojvodina. It was designated a Special Nature Reserve in 2001. It is an important Ramsar, IBA and IPA site and one of the most significant bird habitats in Serbia.
It provides nesting grounds for species that are atypical of the Pannonian Plain and characteristic of the Pontic-Caspian salt steppes and coastal areas. It also serves as a unique stopover site for migratory bird species such as cranes, ducks and geese.
Slano Kopovo is characterised by distinctive halophytic vegetation, including glasswort and saltwort species. Among the mammals, the European ground squirrel, a globally threatened species, is particularly noteworthy.
