“SZECHENYI” CASTLE – Temerin

“SZECHENYI” CASTLE – Temerin

The castle in Temerin adds a special mark to the local history and culture. Its walls, over two centuries old, have witnessed many significant events, hosted important people, and been home to notable families. This single-storey building displays clear stylistic features of elegant and simple Baroque Classicism. As a residential noble estate, it is one of the few that has been preserved almost in its original form.

The castle was built by the Sečen family in 1795. The Sečen family later sold Temerin and the castle to the merchant Antal Fernbah from Apatin. His heirs, Ana and Petar Fernbah, held the entire estate of Temerin until the agrarian reform of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes in 1920.

The best gardeners created a beautiful park during the Sečen period, which the Fernbah family later expanded to ten hectares. A brick wall and moat protected the park from the outside world. The gardens were filled with flowers, ornamental plants, and fountains. From the beginning of the 20th century, the garden, planted with select and unusual trees, was further enhanced with a fountain and various sculptures.

The Temerin Castle was designated a cultural monument of importance in 1949, while the park was protected in 1977. Today, the castle houses the “Lukijan Mušicki” Secondary School.

The castle can be visited on weekends by prior arrangement with the Tourist Organization of the Temerin Municipality

The castle is open to visitors.
