The Gornje Podunavlje Special Nature Reserve is a protected natural area situated within the municipalities of Apatin and Sombor, covering a total area of 19,648 hectares and extending along the Danube from river kilometre 1,433 to river kilometre 1,367. To the north, it borders the Danube–Drava National Park, while Nature Park Kopački Rit stretches along the opposite bank. Together, these areas form a vast natural complex, one of the largest on the European continent.
The long-standing struggle between man and nature, and man’s efforts to restrain the mighty Danube River, which for centuries resisted his desire to control every aspect of nature for the sake of exploitation, led to the disappearance of the vast floodplain wetland that once existed in this part of the Pannonian Plain. By constructing a mighty embankment, man made peace with the river, while the protection of this area enabled nature to preserve part of its heritage. A total of 248 bird species, some of them very rare, including the white-tailed eagle, black storks and cormorants, form part of this invaluable natural wealth. The same is true of the native forests of black poplar, elm, blackthorn and oak, as well as the habitats of numerous species of orchids, water lilies and other plants, all of which bear witness to this priceless natural heritage. The forest is under constant supervision by various services responsible for protecting this heritage from degradation. The roads and paths that wind through the forest are ideal for various forms of recreation. Jogging, walking and exercising on outdoor fitness equipment in the forest have already become regular activities among the residents of Apatin and other nature enthusiasts. Hidden sandy beaches provide ideal spots to enjoy the summer days.
The floodplain area of the Special Nature Reserve, covering approximately 5,560 hectares, serves as a natural spawning ground for around 50 species of freshwater fish, among which the most significant native species include carp, pike, zander, catfish and others. Catches of trophy-sized specimens are not uncommon, particularly catfish, which can weigh more than 30 kilograms. Today, this area offers exceptional fishing opportunities, both on the Danube and in its numerous meanders, side channels and oxbow lakes.
The Reserve is managed by the public enterprise Vojvodinašume, through its Sombor Forest Estate.
