Opovo

In southern Banat, on the banks of the Tamiš River, lies the Municipality of Opovo, one of the smallest municipalities in Vojvodina, situated close to Belgrade, Pančevo and Zrenjanin. Four settlements – Opovo, Baranda, Sakule and Sefkerin – make up this peaceful lowland area, characterised by unspoilt nature and its proximity to major urban centres. The first written records of Opovo date back to the 17th century, while throughout history the area was subject to various administrative and cultural influences that shaped its identity today. Opovo is known as the birthplace of prominent Serbian painters Jovan Popović and Stevan Milosavljević, while the local Orthodox church is home to an iconostasis created by the renowned painter Stevan Todorović. Art lovers are drawn to the “Jovan Popović” Gallery, the local art colony and the open-air sculpture gallery in the centre of the town. The Tamiš River, numerous natural and artificial lakes, and the picturesque landscapes of Banat offer excellent opportunities for fishing, relaxation and spending time in nature. The combination of art, tradition and unspoilt nature makes Opovo an appealing destination for visitors wishing to discover the quieter and more authentic spirit of Banat.
