”KARAŠ-NERA” LANDSCAPE OF OUTSTANDING FEATURES – Bela Crkva

At its session held on 8 April 2015, the Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina adopted a decision to designate the ‘Karaš–Nera’ Landscape of Outstanding Features as a protected area. Covering an area of 1,541 hectares, the protected area comprises 984 hectares under the second degree of protection and 557 hectares under the third degree of protection. The ‘Karaš–Nera’ Landscape of Outstanding Features is located in south-eastern Banat, within the municipality of Bela Crkva, and borders Romania. The protected area consists of three spatial units: ‘Karaš’, ‘Nera’ and ‘Mali Pesak’. Its principal natural values include the preserved abandoned meanders of the Karaš River and the riverine habitats of the Nera, as well as sand dunes and steppe habitats that are a conservation priority in Central Europe. The area also encompasses the most prominent section of dune relief in Serbia. The Nera River forms an ecological corridor of international importance. Flowing along the border between Serbia and Romania, it connects the Carpathian Mountains with the Pannonian Plain.
