PUBLIC LIBRARY – Novi Bečej
Početna / Experiences / PUBLIC LIBRARY – Novi Bečej
The Public Library is located in Novi Bečej, a small town with 15,404 inhabitants. Of this population, 30% are of Hungarian nationality. This is an interesting fact, as both national communities have a long and rich cultural tradition.
The first libraries (known as “Kasinas”) were established as early as 1838, with books in Hungarian, German, and Serbian. Until 1956, numerous libraries (Kasinas) existed in Novi Bečej in both Hungarian and Serbian languages. At that time, the library collections were merged into a single institution, volunteer staff became regular employees, and books began to be processed according to the International Decimal Classification system.
The library was frequently relocated from one building to another until 1989, when it finally received its own building. Until a few years ago, that space met the library’s needs, but with the growth of the collection and the expansion of activities, it became insufficient.
The existence of a rich and highly significant local history collection (including around 700 old posters in both languages) required the construction of a new extension, part of which now houses the local history collection.
