The Archive of Vojvodina was established by decree of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes on August 5, 1926, as the State Archive in Novi Sad. Its mandate was to collect and process archival materials from the territory of then-Vojvodina—Banat, Bačka, Srem, and Baranja.
The Archive preserves 7,902 meters of archival materials across 520 collections and fonds, spanning from the first half of the 18th century up to the year 2000. Materials created before 1918 are written in Latin, German, Hungarian, Slavo-Serbian, and Serbian, while those after 1918 are in Serbian.
Based on the 1998 decision of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia regarding the categorization of archival materials, 55 fonds were designated as cultural heritage of exceptional importance, and 158 fonds as cultural heritage of great importance. The Archive also preserves exceptional collections of charters, maps, and plans, as well as personal fonds.
