“SOKOLAC” CASTLE – Novi Bečej

“SOKOLAC” CASTLE – Novi Bečej

On the road leading from Bečej to Novi Bečej, about a 100km before the turn for Kumane, on the right side you will see a sign for the Sokolac agricultural estate. Turn right and you have arrived. The castle was built by Lazar Dunđerski in the last decades of the 19th century, and his daughter Emilija Ivanović got it as her dowry. The entire estate, which used to be called Veliki Salaš spreads out on 3997 acres. Today, the castle with its park is in very poor condition, although it is private property. A good thing is that the castle has its guardian since it is a home to many original objects from the time of the Dundjerski family. This castle was proclaimed a culture monument in 2001.

The Legend of the Sokolac Castle

Although he was well-known as a good gambler, Lazar Dunđerski was not always on good terms with the cards. Once gambling, he lost this castle and the whole estate around it. The adversary was “generous” and offered to Dunđerski to return both castle and the estate, only with a single shot from the gun. But, in order to make the situation more interesting, he should shoot at an apple placed on the head of his wife. Maybe someone would not take that risk, but Lazar agreed to this and risked losing the castle, and above all his wife… He aimed, held his breath and fired. Maybe he was not good with the cards, but definitely he had a good hand for shooting. Without a quiver, he shot the apple and recovered both castle and the estate.

The castle is not open to visitors!
