Sremski Karlovci

Sremski Karlovci are a picturesque town on the slopes of Fruška Gora, along the Danube, renowned for their vineyards, wine and exceptionally rich cultural and historical heritage. The historical significance of Karlovci is particularly associated with the Treaty of Karlowitz of 1699, when negotiations lasting 72 days were held here, commemorated today by the Peace Chapel. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Karlovci became one of the most important centres of Serbian spiritual, educational and cultural life, as evidenced by the Cathedral Church, the Patriarchal Palace, the Karlovci Grammar School and numerous other representative buildings. The Cathedral Church is of particular value, with its Baroque iconostasis created by Teodor Kračun and Jakov Orfelin, while the Seminary and the Karlovci Grammar School preserve a centuries-old educational tradition that has shaped the cultural life of the Serbian people. In the very centre of the town are the Four Lions Fountain, the Magistrate and the Museum of Sremski Karlovci, dedicated to the history, art and life of the town. Karlovci are inseparably linked with Branko Radičević, whose grave is located at nearby Stražilovo, a favourite excursion spot on Fruška Gora. Today, Sremski Karlovci are a perfect destination for lovers of history, culture and nature, as well as wine, while the vineyards, the famous Bermet wine and traditional events such as Grožđebal, held during the grape harvest, create a particularly distinctive atmosphere.
