Pančevo

At the confluence of the Tamiš and Danube rivers, just fifteen kilometres from Belgrade, lies Pančevo – the economic, cultural and historical centre of southern Banat. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the city is home to a rich archaeological heritage, with the Starčevo archaeological site standing out in particular. It was after this site that one of Europe’s most significant Neolithic cultures was named. Over the centuries, Pančevo developed under the influence of different peoples and cultures, and today it is recognised for its combination of industrial heritage, rich history and well-preserved architecture. Among its most important landmarks are the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God and the Church of the Transfiguration, Vojlovica Monastery, the Chapel of Saint Anne, the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Charles Borromeo, the Reformed and Evangelical Churches, the Chapel of Saint George, and the former Synagogue building. Pančevo is a city whose history and cultural life have been shaped by numerous prominent figures, including Đorđe Vajfert, Uroš Predić, Isidora Sekulić, Mihajlo Pupin, Stevan Šupljikac and Miloš Crnjanski. Nature lovers can enjoy the banks of the Danube and Tamiš rivers, the protected Ponjavica area, recreational facilities, and numerous opportunities for fishing and spending time on the water. The combination of exceptional cultural heritage, natural beauty and a vibrant urban spirit make Pančevo one of the most interesting destinations in southern Banat.
