“KANJIŠKI JARAŠI” LANDSCAPE OF OUTSTANDING FEATURES – Subotica

The Landscape of Outstanding Features “Kanjiški jaraši” is located in the far north of Vojvodina, in the north-eastern part of Bačka, within the municipality of Kanjiža. This Category II protected area covers 3,472 hectares and encompasses the southern part of a unique salt-steppe landscape situated between the alluvial plain of the River Tisa and the Bačka loess plateau.

Key Natural Values of the Area

Endangered Wetland Habitats: The valley of the Kireš stream is home to habitats formed on lowland peat, which are among the most endangered habitats in Europe and worldwide.

The Only Remaining Site of Šafranjika: This landscape is home to the relict forest-steppe plant Bulbocodium versicolor, known locally as šafranjika, for which this is the only remaining habitat in the whole of Serbia.

A Hidden World of Wildlife: In addition to its rich amphibian and reptile populations, the area is home to the strictly protected lesser mole-rat (Spalax leucodon) – a rare subterranean rodent whose range has dramatically decreased as natural steppe habitats have been converted into agricultural land.

The Return of the White-tailed Eagle: Thanks to the establishment of a new feeding site, magnificent birds of prey such as the white-tailed eagle are once again visiting the vast expanses of the sandy landscape.

Sustainable Development and Tourism: Through dedicated spatial planning, this area is being developed as an important destination for rural development, ecotourism and active nature conservation, with particular emphasis on preserving the traditional character of the Pannonian landscape and the distinctive biodiversity of its saline habitats.
