ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES – Kovin

On the territory of the Kovin municipality, artifacts from various periods of human civilization have been discovered, with the most significant period being the Neolithic, when the Starčevo culture was dominant. Fragments of various ceramic objects dating back to around 4000 BCE have been found, among which the most notable is the “Spherical Amphora.” Many items from this period form an important part of the Kovin municipality’s archaeological collection. Settlements along the Danube experienced expansion during the Bronze and Iron Ages, when the river became an important trade route in Europe. From this period, the most significant finds include biconical urns, knives, a Roman sickle, askoi, amulets, Bronze Age cups, and other objects. The Romans also left a substantial mark on this area by constructing a large fortification known as the “Grad.” During the Great Migration period, many barbarian tribes such as the Huns, Goths, Gepids, and Sarmatians inhabited this region. Evidence of their presence is confirmed by still-unexplored sites scattered throughout the area of the Kovin municipality.

The economic history and development of Kovin are also reflected in the coins discovered in the area. Coins have been found at locations such as  large fortification ’Grad’, on the hill to the left and right sides of the road at the beginning of Cara Lazara Street, in the park near the Old Court ( Žarka Zrenjanina Square), and other sites. These coins date from the Dacian period, the Greco-Roman era, the Byzantine period, and the Middle Ages, reflecting not only economic development but also artistic craftsmanship. Many coins depict figures or notable objects in relief, representing small works of art in their own right. Among the coins discovered in Kovin is Dacian silver currency from the 1st century AD, which disappears from the area with the arrival of Roman coinage, along with many others from later periods.

These archaeological treasures are preserved in the Kovin Cultural Center’s archaeological collection and are exhibited in the Gallery.

Visits are possible on weekdays from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with prior notice.
