”ŠILjAK” TOWN GATE – Bač

”ŠILjAK” TOWN GATE – Bač

The tower, which forms the town gate, has a quadrangular ground plan, brick walls and an arched gateway. One storey above the entrance has been preserved, with reason to believe that there was once another storey above it. The tower is roofed and still provides a direct link with the modern town via a contemporary bridge. The tower features two Gothic-style bifora windows. The gate faces east, towards the existing sections of the fortified town. It once had a drawbridge spanning a channel dug to connect the meander of the Mostonga River. This artificial channel, together with an earthen rampart and palisades, enclosed the suburban area, which is bordered by the waters of the Mostonga to the north and south. Today, the suburb consists of around thirty houses. A fortified castle was built at its westernmost point, towards the north-west.
