VRŠAC TOWER – Vršac

VRŠAC TOWER – Vršac

Vršac Tower, a symbol not only of the town but of the entire surrounding region, was built in 1439 and is believed to have been erected by Đurađ Smederevac after the fall of Smederevo, with the aim of protecting his estates in what is today Vojvodina. Of the entire fortification, the best-preserved structure is the donjon tower, standing 20 meters high, which has now been fully restored.

The height of the outer walls is 19.85 meters, and the sides measure 13.80 meters and 11 meters. After the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1701, demolition of the tower began, rendering it unusable for military purposes.

Archaeological research to date has revealed the ramparts and the remains of a circular tower. Movable archaeological materials—such as pottery, stone artifacts, metal weapons and tools, and coins—will, once fully analyzed, provide a more precise picture of life in this fortification within its historical, cultural, and economic context.
