NATURE PARK “STARA TISA”

Nature Park “STARA TISA” near Biserno ostrvo (Pearl Island) covers an area of ​​391 ha, of which 6% is in protect mode II (the second) and the rest belongs III (third) degree of protection and encompasses three municipalities: Bečej, Novi Bečej and Žabalj. The Tisza meander is the longest in Vojvodina and is to 24.5 km long. The category of natural goods under the legislation of the Republic of Serbia – III category. According to the classification of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) – it belongs to the V (fifth) category. The protected area is dominated by surface water and their reed beds and meadows and forests in the coastal part. The goal of protection is to preserve the remaining areas that still provide shelter for plant and animal species and can easily disappear from the area.

The most important value of the Nature Park is a white water lily, which is in the list of natural rarities in Serbia. The most common is a group of aquatic plants that are by some authors of relic features in this part of Europe, as watermilfoil, duckweed, water bite, buttercup. For the biodiversity conservation areas yucca and buttercup are significant which ,under a certain extent of IUCN vulnerability are defined as critically endangered species and are found in a preliminary list of flora of Serbia.

Fish stock is rich with 23 species of fish for example sunfish, carp, catfish, ide. The most vulnerable species are minnow, swordfish, catfish, pike, asp and their protection in the area where they live is regulated by law (according to the Berne Convention).

This locality is noted by7 species of amphibians and 3 species of reptiles. It is important to preserve the sites of listed species because it is necessary for survival and reproduction, and some are among the natural rarities.

In the investigated area 166 bird species are registered, of which 87 species are protected by the Decree on Protection of Natural Rarities of the Republic of Serbia, while some belong to the group of the most endangered species on the planet, such as: the pygmy cormorant, ferruginous duck, white-tailed eagle, the saker falcon which are passers-by or rare guests. In the CITES list there are three of highly endangered species such as: white-tailed eagle, falcon, barn. In the area of ​​”OLD TISA” special attention should be paid to protect nesting birds, especially rare species such as: the bittern, marsh, Little Crake and bluethroat as reed beds and riparian vegetation are one of the most important habitats for them.

The mammal fauna is rich in species. Most mammal species are endangered such as otter, badger, marten, ermine, as by man persecution, and even more because of habitat loss. All these species are important link of functioning of existing ecosystems in the food chain.

This preserved backwaters border with or flow through an agricultural area of ​​a large swamp, the “Pearl Island” and the “weekend” area of Bačko Gradište and Čurug. The backwaters is about 25 km long and is the longest dead zone with us along the river Tisza. By cutting off its flow Dead Tisa preserved its natural values. It is rich in quality water, the reason being the absence of polluters and the lack of connection with the river flow. It is suitable place for sports fishing (23 species of fish), recreation, rest and growing of fruit and vine sorts. White fish, carp, carp, perch is being caught.
