Žitište is located in the heart of central Banat, on an important route between Zrenjanin and Timișoara, not far from the border with Romania, and comprises 12 settlements. The Begej and Old Begej rivers flow through the municipality and, together with its extensive network of canals, offer excellent opportunities for fishing, spending time in nature and recreational tourism. The fertile plains and more than 44,000 hectares of arable land make agriculture one of the area’s main economic activities, while hunting and sport fishing represent additional assets and opportunities for tourism development. Žitište is known for its strongly multicultural character, shaped by centuries of coexistence between Serbs, Romanians, Hungarians and other communities, which is also reflected in the municipality’s rich cultural life. Of particular importance are its numerous cultural activities and events, which preserve local traditions and foster connections between different communities. Nature lovers can explore the flat landscapes along the Begej, as well as the area’s fishponds and hunting grounds, while the municipality’s immediate proximity to Romania offers additional potential for the development of cross-border and transit tourism. Žitište is therefore an appealing destination for discovering authentic Banat, its natural resources, agricultural traditions and multicultural heritage.
