“STARČEVO GRAD” ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE – Starčevo

The eponymous site of the Early Neolithic culture of the Central Balkans is located on the bank of the Danube, northwest of the village of Starčevo, 8 km from Pančevo. At the settlement, pit-houses of circular and elliptical shapes, up to 26 m in diameter (two of which contained hearths), were uncovered, along with several graves containing skeletons in a crouched position. The main characteristic of the Starčevo cultural group is painted pottery in white, black, and red, which, when compared with painted ceramics of Neolithic cultures of the Danube region, Greece, and the Near East, helps to address questions about the origins and migration routes of the first carriers of Neolithic culture in this area.
