NATURE PARK JEGRIČKA

The catchment area of Jegrička is formed in the south Bačka area, namely on its loess terrace. It covers the area of 144,200 ha. The elongated shape of the catchment covers the area of about 100 km with the average width of 14.5 kilometers. The first depiction of the Jegrička river course dates back to 1762 shown in the Bačka – Bodrog County maps. Today Jegrička is the right tributary of the Tisza river. Although it is the largest and longest waterway of southern Bačka, with the total length of 65 km, it is not a real river. It consists of a number of marshes connected by wider or shorter slushes. Its natural beginning is in the area of Despotovo, Silbaš, Parage, Ratkovo and Pivnice. Formerly the longest national (autochthonous) river of Bačka, which does not have any classical spring, is supplied with water from several depressions which are located to the south from Despotovo. This small river represents the system of connected ponds through which the water flows out to its confluence into the river Tisa.

At the end of 2005, Jegrička was proclaimed a park of nature (important natural resource under the protection of the 3rd category). The decision was accepted later on by the municipalities through which the Jegrička flows – Bačka Palanka, Vrbas and Temerin. The state company VODE VOJVODINE is in charge of taking care of the park.

The protected area covers approximately 1,144 acres, out of which about 21 % is in the 2nd and the rest in the 3rd protection mode. The Park of Nature “Jegrička” is rich in flora and fauna. White water lilies, marsh ferns, water chestnuts and common bladderwort give Jegrička uncommon beauty. It is inhabited with protected fish species: carp, perch, pike and catfish. You can also find otters ,the species from the global Red List of vertebrates. Jegrička is designated as the important area for the Protection of Birds (IBA) and it is a candidate to be registered in the international list of Ramsar (wetland) areas.

Within the park the new information center in Temerin is opened. Its purpose is to enable visitors to provide all necessary information and services, and the possibility of organizing of one-day excursion as well as the so called „School in nature”.
