“ZASAVICA” SPECIAL NATURE RESERVE – Sremska Mitrovica

The Special Nature Reserve “Zasavica” is one of the most valuable and fascinating protected areas in Serbia. Situated in the lowland landscape between Srem and Mačva, near Sremska Mitrovica and Mačvanska Mitrovica, the Reserve is an exceptional place for relaxation, exploring nature and discovering rare plant and animal species. Zasavica has been protected since 1997, and due to the international importance of its wetland habitats, it is also included on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance.

Natural Wealth Between the Sava and Drina

The Reserve extends across southern Vojvodina and northern Mačva, east of the Drina and south of the Sava. Its natural backbone consists of the Zasavica River and its tributary, the Batar, whose waterways, together with canals, marshes, floodplain meadows and forests, create a distinctive lowland landscape.

The Reserve encompasses a succession of open bodies of water, reed beds, wet meadows, pastures and wooded areas. This diversity of habitats has enabled a large number of plants, birds, fish, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and other organisms to survive. The total area of the protected site is 1,825 hectares, of which 675 hectares are under the first-degree protection regime.

A World of Rare Plants and Animals

Zasavica is known for its rich biodiversity. More than 650 plant species, over 200 bird species and 20 fish species have been recorded in the area, along with a large number of amphibians, reptiles and mammals. Of particular natural value are the rare and protected species that have survived thanks to the preservation of its wetland habitats.

One of the symbols of the Reserve is the European mudminnow, also known by its Latin name, Umbra krameri. Zasavica is also notable for the presence of the waterwheel plant, a rare carnivorous plant, as well as for the successful project to reintroduce the European beaver into the wild in Serbia. Visitors can also see indigenous breeds of domestic animals, including the Balkan donkey, Mangalica pig, Podolian cattle and the domestic mountain horse.

A Nature Experience for the Whole Family

A visit to Zasavica is enjoyable for all generations. Families with children can spend a day outdoors, meet the domestic animals and learn why preserving wetlands is important. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy walking, landscape photography and birdwatching, while organised groups and schoolchildren can take part in educational tours.

One of the most enjoyable ways to explore the Reserve is by taking a ride on the “Umbra” tourist boat. The peaceful boat trip allows visitors to experience the aquatic and wetland world of Zasavica from a different perspective. The tourist offer also includes rides on an electric bus across the Valjevac pasture, photo safaris, birdwatching and walking tours through nature.

Visitor Centre and Valjevac Pasture

The main visitor reception area is located at Valjevac pasture. The Visitor Centre serves as the starting point for organised tours, boat trips and exploration of the natural values of the Reserve. The extensive pasture, bodies of water and unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape create a pleasant setting for a short break or a full-day excursion.

A stay in Zasavica offers an opportunity to slow down from the pace of everyday life and enjoy the tranquillity of the lowlands. The sound of birds, the rustling of reeds, the calm water and the free movement of animals make this destination completely different from conventional urban recreational areas.

Authentic Flavours of Zasavica

The tourist experience is complemented by a selection of local products made within the Reserve. Zasavica is particularly known for products made from donkey’s milk, Mangalica products and traditional specialities. Visitors can learn about the production, storage and maturation of individual products, as well as taste the distinctive flavours of the region.

A Place for Excursions, Relaxation and Learning

The Special Nature Reserve “Zasavica” is an excellent choice for family outings, school trips, organised tourist groups, photographers, birdwatchers and all visitors who wish to spend time in well-preserved natural surroundings. Each season brings a different appearance to the landscape, meaning that Zasavica can be visited throughout the year.

The Reserve is open all 365 days of the year, every day from 9 am until sunset. The Visitor Centre is located at Valjevac pasture, in the settlement of Zasavica II. Before visiting, it is recommended to check the times of organised tours, the availability of boat trips and other activities.
