THE MONASTERY OF THE HOLY MOTHER MELANIE THE ROMAN – Zrenjanin

The Monastery of St. Melanija the Roman is situated on the north – east edge of the town, part called “Vodica”. It was found by episcope of Banat dr. Georgije Letić in 1935. It was the first women monastery in Banat eparchy.

The architecture of the monastery is in Byzantium style. On the south part of old house from 1935. was built the new monastery complex in Moravian style in 1990. The iconostasis was made by Vršac painter Svetislav Vuković in 1937. On the Mother of God Throne there is the icon “The Arabian Mother of God with Christ” work of an unknown painter, and in the altar the icon “The Crucifixion of Christ”, painted on canvas.

In the chapel in “Vodice” is the icon “The Mother of God with Christ” and the icon of St. Nikola from 1899. On the Holy Table in the altar is kept the old Throne Gospel from 1663., and copper etching of Greek “Antimus”, made in Wien in 1772. The first Head nun of the monastery was Petronija Savić, the sister of the scientist dr. Vasa Savić. Nuns live and take care about the monastery even today.
