ROMANIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL – Alibunar

ROMANIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL – Alibunar

The religious building was constructed between 1892 and 1896. Work on the church began in 1895, following a design by Adrian Diacon. In terms of its architectural style, size and location, the building was considered one of the finest of its kind. The construction work was carried out in accordance with the plans approved by the Parish Committee. On 14 September 1896, a cross was placed atop the tower. This was followed by a further two years of continuous work, during which the interior was completed, including the iconostasis, the frescoes and the essential furnishings required for the celebration of religious services. Chronicles from that period tell us that Christianity was brought to this region through the preaching of bishops and priests who had arrived from the Romanian lands. The church’s interior decoration was entrusted to Filip Matei, a Banat painter of Transylvanian origin, known as ‘Rumun Mačej’ (Filip Matei, church painter, 1853–1940). The sculptures were created by the sculptor Nistor Bosioc and his sons. An inscription bearing the date 28 June 1898 can be found on the reverse side of the Royal Doors. The church was consecrated in 1912 by Dr Miron Cristea, the bishop. In 1971, restoration work was carried out, consisting of external repairs to the church building.
