DUNAVSKI (DANUBE) PARK – Novi Sad

Located in the very heart of the city, Dunavski Park occupies an area of 33,695 m² between Mihajla Pupina Boulevard and Iva Lole Ribara, Dunavska, Ignjata Pavlasa and Jovana Đorđevića Streets. With more than 250 plant species, it has become one of the most beautiful and best-maintained parks in Novi Sad. In the 19th century, this area was known as Liman, a marshy branch of the Danube overgrown with reeds and willows. The ground here was considerably lower than the surrounding area, as the soil was used to build the embankment along the Danube.

When plans were made to develop the park, the depressions with their silty-sandy substrate were first filled with earth. Only the pond at the lowest elevation, 76 metres above sea level, was preserved. It was later lined with masonry, creating a lake with a small island known as ‘Eržebet’. A weeping willow was planted on the island in memory of Empress of Austria, who was assassinated in 1898. At the entrance to the park from Dunavska Street stands the ‘Devojka sa rogom izobilja’ (Nymph) fountain, a work by Đorđe Jovanović, the first Serbian sculptor to receive formal academic training. The park is also home to monuments and busts of Đura Jakšić, Saint Sergius of Radonezh, Branko Radičević and Miroslav Antić.

According to the methodology used to assess the value of parks, Dunavski Park belongs to the first category, as a park of particular value. It is protected by the state as a monument of nature.
