JEREMIJA – SERBIAN MUSEUM OF BREAD – Pećinci

JEREMIJA – SERBIAN MUSEUM OF BREAD – Pećinci

The Jeremija – Serbian Bread Museum was founded in 1995. This project emerged from the research work of the painter Jeremija, who has been studying bread for several decades. The museum is located in the village of Pećinci, in the Srem region.

Spanning approximately 1,200 square meters, the complex consists of a series of consecutively constructed buildings housing the collections. The core concept of the exhibition shows the journey of the wheat grain “from the earth, through bread, to the sky,” corresponding with the cycles of Jeremija’s paintings – “Earth, Bread” and “Sky”. Due to the strong influence of the artist on the entire complex, the museum itself is considered part of Jeremija’s artistic work.

The museum collection comprises around 2,000 items, organized into three thematic groups: ethnological, archaeological, and artistic.

Ethnological collection: tools for farming, transportation and carrying devices, equipment for processing wheat and corn, items for kneading and baking bread, household objects, and ritual breads.

Archaeological collection: prehistoric and ancient artifacts.

Artistic collection: paintings and drawings by Jeremija.

The complex also includes a bread-baking oven (furuna), a hearth, and a gift shop. A unique feature is the church dedicated to the Serbian Slava and bread, entirely built and painted by Jeremija himself.

Through the displayed objects, documents, and artworks, the museum tells the story of bread in Serbia—its production, significance, symbolism, and the people, customs, and ways of life connected to it. A distinctive feature of the exhibition is the hands-on approach: many objects can be touched, and some can even be operated, allowing visitors to experience their original function and enjoy an authentic encounter with the past.

The complex also includes a resting area, a souvenir shop, and a large parking lot.

Opening hours: Saturday–Sunday, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Group visits outside regular hours can be arranged by prior appointment.
