ĆIRA MILEKIĆ SQUARE – Sremska Mitrovica

The Square is situated within the old town centre and, for a long time, it used to be one of the busiest town streets. It got its final appearance at the beginning of the 3rd millennium, when its appearance and content were formally defined by the arrangement of the pedestrian area. It was named after the first mayor of Mitrovica, Sir Cira Milekic, who had governed the town from 1881 to 1908. In memory of remarkable material and cultural development of the town at that time, the local authorities set up the bust of Cira Milekic on the square that bears his name in 2003. Ground-floor and two-storey buildings on the square were being built from the end of the 18th century till the second half of the 20th century and they had diverse purposes. Usually, the first floor was designed for living, while the business premises were situated on the ground-floor. Due to the long period of creation of the square as a whole, we can see the elements of the diverse architectural styles from neo-renaissance, neo-baroque, academism, secession to modernistic style. “Srpski dom” is the most monumental building on the square, and there are two more buildings that distinguish themselves by their esthetic values: Parsonage, the gift of Tosa and Jelena Bajic to Serbian orthodox parish, and representative ground-floor building built at the entrance to the square (No 2) in secession style in 1913.
