CHARDA “DANUBE” – Bačka Palanka

CHARDA “DANUBE” – Bačka Palanka

On the spot where a ferry used to connect Backa Palanka and Ilok, a carda (tavern) was built more than two centuries ago, that is to say, in the 18th century. It became one of the most famous inns in the region of the middle flow of the Danube, which was attending the guests that were in transit and those who were intentionally coming to this place. Thick and hot fish stew with noodles has always attracted hungry guests. A glass of brandy before the meal and a couple of spritzers afterward is other reasons to stop by. Even today, you can hear the tunes of violas and tamburitza (a type of small guitar) in a Carda.

Zvonko Bogdan, a renowned poet, and singer of old-time urban songs have mentioned a famous Uncle Misa’s band from this Carda in one of his poems. There were many popular orchestras from Palanka and its vicinity that was entertaining the guests day and night. Although Carda is visited during the entire year, it is particularly attractive in the summertime for the vicinity of the Danube beaches.

Visitors from all over the country come to this Carda, as well as, the visitors from Croatia. The number of guests in transit has decreased since the construction of the bridge across the Danube between Backa Palanka and Ilok in 1976. Nevertheless, many people remember Carda and huge 160-year-old plane trees and water thuja, a unique tree in our country, with its alley planted in the vicinity cherish the memory of those pleasant days.

The restaurant hall has a capacity of 100 seats, while an outdoor terrace can attend 80 people. There is a glassed-in garden with 60 seats.
