THE SCHOOL IN ADAHATAR – Gornji Breg

THE SCHOOL IN ADAHATAR – Gornji Breg

The school in Adahatar is one of the last gems of the still-existing “salaš” (farmstead) world, built in 1883. Initially, there were around 60–70 students, and at times even 120, but eventually the number dropped to about 8–10 students, until the school was finally closed in 2004. The Adahatar school is owned by the Municipality of Senta.

It was saved from complete destruction by a community movement. An initiative called “Save the School in Adahatar” made it possible for the ideas of local residents to come to life, preserving the building as a kind of museum where everyone can experience the atmosphere of an old farmstead school. Adahatar, that is, the series of farmsteads that make it up, belongs to the Senta municipality, specifically the village of Gornji Breg. From the village, an 11-kilometer paved road leads to the remaining farmsteads and the center of the farmstead world.

The building is protected by the Inter-Municipal Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments.
