“KARAS” CASTLE – Horgoš

“KARAS” CASTLE – Horgoš

The castle was built in 1795 according to the plan of an unknown Viennese architect, in the style of provincial Baroque, for the heir of Count Antal Miklós Karas, the founder of the town of Horgoš. The building is single-storey, with a floor plan shaped like the Cyrillic letter G, where the end section forms the main building, and the courtyard wing was most likely added later.

A wide staircase and porch lead to the representative part of the building. The railing of the porch is made of wrought iron, as are all the grilles on the windows and doors. On the main asymmetrical, two-part façade, the risalit is highlighted by a Baroque roof front, supported by four tall pilasters with composite capitals, resting on an architrave frieze decorated with triglyphs and metopes. Above the shallow arches of the risalit’s windows and doors, there is sculptural relief decoration, and above the other openings, profiled architrave beams on consoles.

The main façade features a central risalit, asymmetrically placed along its length, emphasized by the entrance staircase and a shallow terrace, and at roof height highlighted by a Baroque attic and a mansard roof. Overall, the castle of the Karas family displays clear Baroque characteristics in both its design and details.

After the Second World War, the castle was used as a school. Today, it has no function and is in very poor condition. Despite its deteriorated state, the castle is a cultural monument of great importance.

The castle is not open to visitors.
