THE KARAŠ RIVER – Bela Crkva

THE KARAŠ RIVER – Bela Crkva

The Karaš River (Romanian: Caraș) originates in Romania and flows into the Danube–Tisa–Danube Canal (DTD) between Dupljaja and Grebenac. From there, its former natural course towards the Danube is now incorporated into the present-day DTD canal system, which has preserved beautiful cut-off meanders (locally known as “mrtvaci” – “dead arms of the Karaš”). These oxbow lakes remain rich in fish.

The river is particularly notable for its small cascades (“gatovi”), which give this area its distinctive authenticity and attractiveness, and are located not far from Jasenovo. Through the enthusiasm of local individuals, this landscape has been transformed into a well-maintained recreational area offering relaxation and leisure.

In addition to sports fields, a summer restaurant, a campsite and a beach, the site also features a mini zoo and a sculpture park, which is expanded each year thanks to an art colony held at the beginning of August.

The Karaš River is suitable for swimming, fishing, and canoeing along its course.
