THE SPRING “KOZARICA” – Čortanovci

St. Sava was at the spring of Čortanovci at the beginning of the 18th century, when he reconciled his brother Stevan and the Hungarian King Andria II. The path he used to cross the Danube to reach Kovilj was named Savinac. At the spring “Kozarica” the reveille for Djurdjevdan were also organized, at the same time when it was normally the village celebration as well. To the reveille the guests from all around Srem used to come, usually by train, which on that day only used to go from Zemun to Čortanovci.

The first hallmark was put up in 1848, and the spring was built in 1890. It was mainly preserved until 1964, but four years ago the wall part completely collapsed together with the icon of St. George. The spring was reconstructed according to the project of The National Park of Fruška Gora, which also redacted the surroundings. The icon of St. George was painted by a painter from Indjija, Živorad Radivojević – Čeda. Each year certain events are organized at the spring “Kozarica”, so that its life would continue, and especially because of the fact that water is becoming one of the most important natural resources.
