The Gornje Podunavlje Special Nature Reserve is a protected natural area extending across the territories of the municipalities of Apatin and Sombor. It covers a total area of 19,648 hectares, extending along the Danube from river kilometre 1,433 to 1,367. To the north, it borders the Drava–Danube National Park, while on the opposite bank lies Kopački Rit Nature Park. Together, these areas form a vast natural complex, one of the largest of its kind on the European continent.
The centuries-long struggle between people and nature, and the taming of the mighty Danube, which for centuries resisted humankind’s desire to control every aspect of nature for the purposes of exploitation, led to the disappearance of the extensive floodplain and wetland area that once existed in this part of the Pannonian Plain. With the construction of a massive embankment, people made peace with the river, while the protection of this area has enabled nature to preserve part of its heritage.
The reserve is home to 248 bird species, including some very rare species such as the white-tailed eagle, black stork and cormorants, forming part of its priceless natural wealth. The native forests of black poplar, elm, blackthorn and oak, together with habitats supporting several species of orchids, water lilies and other plants, are further testament to this invaluable natural heritage. The forests are under constant supervision by various services responsible for protecting this heritage from degradation. The roads and paths running through the forest are ideal for various forms of recreation. Jogging, walking and exercising on outdoor fitness equipment in the forest have become popular activities among the people of Apatin and nature enthusiasts alike. Hidden sandy beaches provide ideal spots for enjoying summer days.
The floodplain area of the Special Nature Reserve, covering approximately 5,560 hectares, serves as a natural spawning ground for around 50 species of freshwater fish. Among the most important are native species such as carp, pike, zander and catfish. Catches of trophy-sized fish are not uncommon, particularly catfish, which can weigh more than 30 kilograms. Today, the area offers exceptional opportunities for fishing, both on the Danube and on its numerous meanders, side channels and oxbow lakes.
The reserve is managed by Vojvodinašume Public Enterprise, Sombor Forest Management Unit. Information about the tourist offer and the price list of services is available here.
