CHARDA “ŠTUKA” – Kupusina

Tavern “Štuka” (Pike) is an ideal place for a memorable experience. It is situated in Special Nature Reserve Gornje Podunavlje (Upper Danube), on the bank of Monostor Dunavac, a former river bed of the Danube, near Kupusina village. A visit to this tavern surrounded by hundred-year-old oak trees represents a true adventure. It takes 30 minutes’ walk through the woods to reach this land of no return from the nearest asphalt road. If the paths in the woods are dry, it is possible to ride a bicycle.
The other option to get to the tavern is to sail down the Dunavac from Fishermen’s Club “Pcela” (Bee), from the direction of Apatin. The tavern provides an unusual scene. A memorable fish stew is cooked, surrounded by fishermen’s trophies, nets, and fishing-rods, by the visitors themselves or some of the fishermen present. Patient guests can also hear the stories of the veterans about the bygone days when they used to catch over 170 carps a year or catfish weighing 70 to 80 kilos.
The riverbank, where the tavern has been working for the last 50 years, had been, actually, the bank of the Danube until 1830, but then the river changed its flow. It reduced the length of its flow from Bezdan to Apatin leaving 17 km of still water abundant in fish, surrounded with beautiful marsh areas and thick woods, where 287 bird species and approximately 30 sorts of wild animals live. Fishermen and admirers of nature from all over the country come to this paradise in spring, summer, and autumn. They come, fall in love with the place – and, then, return again!
