ETHNO HOUSE “AKSENTIJEV KUĆERAK” – Ogar

ETHNO HOUSE “AKSENTIJEV KUĆERAK” – Ogar

In Ogar, a richly preserved peasant house from the late 18th century can be found. It is the oldest house in this part of Srem. The wealth of the family was reflected in the use of what was then a rare roofing material—beaver-tail tiles. The building was constructed using a timber-frame (bondruk) structure, with wattle infill and walls coated with clay plaster. The basic three-part layout of the house developed a specific variant in the Lower Srem region. At the entrance, there is a small porch leading into all three rooms: the rooms on either side and the kitchen in the center. The floor plan is not the usual rectangular shape, as the outer kitchen wall is extended outward, creating a space known in Srem as a “kućer.” The kitchen retains an open chimney as well as a built-in stove. The ceiling in the front room is made of reed, plastered and whitewashed, while in the other room the central beam and cross ceiling beams are visible, with wooden infill. A particular value of the house lies in the design of its street-facing gable. The abundance of wood in Lower Srem enabled local residents to build houses with richly decorated gables, featuring characteristic motifs created through paneled wood arrangements and the use of decorative moldings within them.
