TAMBURICA FEST MUSEUM – NOVI SAD

TAMBURICA FEST MUSEUM – NOVI SAD

Novi Sad has in recent years gained a new museum dedicated to “her majesty” – the tamburica. In celebration of the city’s title as European Capital of Culture, the Tamburica Fest Museum was established in the Menrat Palace, a representative Secession-style building constructed in 1908, located at 14 Kralja Aleksandra Street.

With the opening of this museum, Tamburica Fest and the World Tamburica Association have gained a home, presenting over two centuries of tamburica tradition in Vojvodina through a unique museological exhibition. The most valuable exhibit is undoubtedly the tamburica that belonged to the legendary Janika Balaž, donated by the renowned Pannonian chansonnier Zvonko Bogdan, honorary president of the World Tamburica Association.

Visitors can also see other instruments, sheet music, and exhibits from the founders of tamburica culture, including Mita Orešković, Vasa Jovanović, Sava Vukosavljev, Marko Nešić, Janika Balaž, and many others—all in one place.

The museum was developed with the assistance of a joint team of prominent institutions: the Gallery of Matica Srpska, Museum of Vojvodina, Academy of Arts, University of Novi Sad, and the Tourist Organization of Novi Sad.

Since 2021, the tamburica has been registered in the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Serbia.

As the founder Jovan Pejčić stated on behalf of the World Tamburica Association and the Tamburica Fest Museum:

“Vojvodina without the tamburica would be just a field, and Novi Sad a city without a soul. With this space, we have enriched the memory of all great tamburica players and instruments, preserved them from oblivion, and protected our tradition.”*
